Olivo Barbieri

IT. Olivo Barbieri (Carpi, Modena 1954) inizia a esporre nel 1978.
La sua ricerca si concentra inizialmente sull’illuminazione artificiale nella città europea e orientale. Dal 1989 viaggia abitualmente in Oriente, soprattutto in Cina.
Nel 1996, il Museum Folkwang di Essen, gli dedica una retrospettiva.
Nel 2003 inizia il progetto site specific_ (fotografie e film) che coinvolge più di quaranta città nel mondo.
Ha esposto nei più importanti musei, istituzioni e festival internazionali, tra i quali MoMA San Francisco, Sundance Film Festival, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Walker Art Centre, Jeu de Paume, ecc.
Nel 1993, 1995, 1997, 2011 e 2013 partecipa alla Biennale di Venezia; nel 2003 partecipa a Strangers, la prima Triennale di fotografia e video all’ICP di New York; nel 2006 alla II Biennale di Siviglia a cura di Okwui Enwezor.
Nel 2008 espone TWIY al Museo Capodimonte di Napoli e nel 2011 Dolomites Project 2010 al Mart di Rovereto.
Le serie site specific_ (2003-2013), Parks (2006-2015), Real Worlds (2008-2013), Images (1978-2007), Virtual Truths (1996-2002) e Artificial Illuminations (1980-2014) hanno in comune la riflessione sulla quantità di realtà presente nel nostro sistema di vita, e su quanto la nostra percezione sia in grado di comprenderla.
Nel 2013 “Aperture” pubblica site specific_03 13.
Nel 2015 Hatje Cantz pubblica ERSATZ LIGHTS.
Nel 2015 il MAXXI di Roma presenta la retrospettiva Immagini 1978-2014.
Due film della serie site specific_ fanno parte della collezione del MoMA New York.
Sull’opera dell’artista sono state pubblicate cinquanta monografie e cataloghi. Opere di Barbieri sono presenti in musei e collezioni d’arte pubbliche e private in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

EN. Olivo Barbieri (Carpi, Modena 1954) begins showing his work in 1978.
Initially, his research focuses on the artificial lighting of cities in Europe and the East. From 1989 onwards, he regularly travels to the East, especially to China.
In 1996, the Museum Folkwang in Essen hosts a retrospective of his work.
In 2003, he begins a project he calls site specific_ (photographs and films) involving over forty cities around the world.
He exhibits his works in the major museums, institutions, and international festivals, including MoMA San Francisco, Sundance Film Festival, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Walker Art Centre, Jeu de Paume, etc.
In 1993, 1995, 1997, 2011, and 2013 he participates in the Venice Biennale, in 2003, he takes part in Strangers, the first Triennial of Photography and Video at the ICP in New York, and in 2006, at the 2nd Seville Biennial curated by Okwui Enwezor.
In 2008, he shows TWIY at the Museo Capodimonte in Naples, and in 2011, Dolomites Project 2010 at the Mart in Rovereto.
His series entitled site specific_ (2003-2013), Parks (2006-2015), Real Worlds (2008-2013), Images (1978-2007), Virtual Truths (1996-2002) and Artificial Illuminations (1980-2014) share a reflection on the amount of reality that is present in our system of life, and on how much our perception is capable of understanding it.
In 2013, “Aperture” publishes site specific_03 13.
In 2015, Hatje Cantz publishes ERSATZ LIGHTS.
In 2015, MAXXI in Rome presents the retrospective Immagini 1978-2014.
Two films in the site specific_ series are part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York.
Fifty monographic texts and catalogs have been published about the artist’s work. Barbieri’s works are present in museums and art collections both public and private in Europe and the United States.
