IT. Maria Lai (Ulassai, 1919 - Cardedu, 2013), sospesa in un
tempo in cui si combinano
antichità secolari e attualità, è
stata intenta per oltre cinquant’anni nel suo straordinario gioco dell’arte. Instancabile sperimentatrice di tecniche
e materiali, dagli anni Sessanta carica tele e telai di grovigli
di fili che si trasformano in
grafie libere di pagine scritte
o in costellazioni, mappe e
geografie fantastiche. Il filo
è mezzo espressivo privilegiato, elemento materico ma
anche segno, assimilabile al
suo raffinato tratto grafico,
per diventare poi un nastro
che lega silenziosamente un
intero paese alla montagna.

current, for over fifty years
approached art as her own
extraordinary form of playing. Always experimenting
with techniques and materials, beginning in the 1960s
she loaded canvases and
frames with tangles of threads
that morphed into wild lines
of writing, constellations,
maps, imaginary geographies.
Threads were her favorite
means of expression, not just
in their material form, but
also as lines in her refined
works of graphic art, even
becoming the very thing that
quietly tied an entire village
to its mountain.
