IT.

EN. Though adjoining and cooperating in human anatomy, the hand and the arm are not seldom felt and thought by literature as divergent, if not conflicting. And, before literature, by language itself. The very languages that name them with the one and same word make sensible the chasm which separates them, which may separate them, and that the one and same word tries to fill, or to conceal. Around this simple discovery (true discoveries are always simple) turns the present essay. It is rooted in a peculiar moment of my personal history: when taking leave from and saying farewell to my students, I didn’t want to wave my hand, but to remind them of the power of the arm of poetry, which sustains and abandons, perhaps at the same time. The present essay is therefore, also, what it has been: a lecture. In its concrete form, the arm of poetry cannot be seen and thought otherwise than as the arm in the poems. Hence the specimens with their analysis. The reader will observe that “arms”, and very important ones, thicken, with a new quality to them, in the lapse of time from 1850 to 1950. There is a reason for that. While western civilization was increasingly being caught in the meshes and coils of reactive structures, poetry has preserved a space free from them, antithetic to them, a space that can be well represented by the arm, which then appears somewhat like the unconscious of the brotherly and reactive hand.

L'autore
Giacomo Magrini

IT.

EN. Born in Recanati in 1949, june 22, Giacomo Magrini has finished there his high school studies. Then he graduated at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore. From 1976 to 2014 he taught Literary Criticism and Comparative Literature at the University of Siena. Francesco Orlando, Franco Fortini and Cesare Garboli have been his main masters and friends. He thinks that literary criticism, in order to attain its high aims, must be discovery, invention and will to power too. His writings witness this idea of literary criticism: especially those on the “great-oeuvre kleinbürgerlich”, on the originary specialists, on the short story as pregnancy; but also the ones on the French partitive, on the Italian verb recare in Leopardi’s poetry, on the phrases lying face downwards and lying face upwards (prono e supino). Giacomo Magrini hopes and wishes that the present essay on the arm of/in poetry make a contribution in the direction.
