Il libro

IT.
Olivo Barbieri

EN. Olivo Barbieri faced the change of scale and photographed the landscapes of ruins from above and close up, seeking through a twofold gaze to lend a voice to what the disaster leaves behind and to what the future awaits from this vision.
«Visually, earthquakes can have two observation points. As I’ve tried to make evident both in the exhibition and in the book, two perceptions, from the ground and from above, tell us very different things. When you’re on the ground you perceive it almost like a “renaissance” disaster: our cities were mostly built according to the laws of perspective. Even among the ruins it isn’t hard to single out with one’s gaze the perspectival vanishing points that lead to the most important building. In a view from above we instead realize the extent of the disaster itself, because the size of the craters in the buildings is clearly visible. I think it is of essential importance to preserve these two points of view in order to have an overall perception of the effects of the earthquake».
