I duecentocinquantadue tessuti presenti in questo volume compongono la straordinaria collezione di stoffe di Isabella Ducrot. La raccolta tocca quattro continenti – dal Sudamerica alla Cina e al Giappone, passando per Francia, Tunisia, Marocco, India, Pakistan e Tibet –, in un arco temporale che va dal IX al XX secolo. I tessuti vengono illustrati attraverso riproduzioni fotografiche dettagliate e informazioni essenziali alla loro comprensione (aree di provenienza, epoca, dimensioni, materiale, tessitura).
Queste stoffe sono state raccolte per anni. Isabella Ducrot le ha cercate nei mercati, durante i viaggi, dagli antiquari, nei grandi magazzini, sulle bancarelle dei villaggi e alle aste, sempre mossa dalla fascinazione per un lavoro di artigianato specializzato il cui risultato non è un’opera d’arte nel senso convenzionale: «mentre l’opera d’arte singola esige il gesto inventivo, creativo dell’artista, gli scialli sono l’effetto di una collettività, di una cultura, in cui l’individuo si annulla in nome del gruppo. Se questa coralità produttiva, se questa tessitura sociale non sussiste, il prodotto ne risente».

The two hundred and fifty-two textiles in this volume make up Isabella Ducrot’s extraordinary fabric collection. The collection touches four continents—from South America to China and Japan, via France, Tunisia, Morocco, India, Pakistan, and Tibet—over a time span from the 9th to the 20th centuries. The fabrics are illustrated through detailed photographic reproductions and information essential to their understanding (areas of origin, age, size, material, weaving). These fabrics have been collected for years. Isabella Ducrot searched for them in markets, on trips, at antique shops, in department stores, on village stalls or by placing winning bids at auction, always moved by a fascination with a specialized craftsmanship whose result is not a work of art in the conventional sense: “while an individual work of art demands inventive, creative intervention from an artist, these shawls are the end-result of a collective culture in which individuals efface themselves in the name of the group. Without this productive chorus and social weave, the product suffers.”
IT. Isabella Ducrot (Napoli 1931) da anni ha fatto dello studio e dell’interesse per la storia dei tessuti il centro delle sue opere pittoriche e dei suoi scritti.
