Cellula è un modo inedito di praticare il discorso intorno al teatro. Un approccio che si focalizza sull’analisi dei processi di creazione, di cui le opere sono il risultato, attraverso l’intreccio della voce e del pensiero di un teorico del teatro, Enrico Pitozzi, e di un’artista, Ermanna Montanari. A partire dall’individuazione di alcuni aspetti centrali delle opere del Teatro delle Albe – di cui Montanari è cofondatrice –, gli immaginari dei due autori si incontrano senza limitare l’orizzonte di riflessione alla sola scena, ma aprendo a considerazioni di ordine filosofico e storico-artistico che nutrono la composizione teatrale. Cellula è un libro in cui le immagini fotografiche di un percorso ormai quarantennale dialogano tra loro e con le parole, aggregate attorno ad alcuni temi come il diafano, la tattilità, il colore, il vegetale e la geometria, che costituiscono le sezioni di cui si compone il volume.

Cellula is an unprecedented way of talking about theatre, an approach focused on the analysis of the creative process which brings artworks to fruition, by interweaving the voice and thought of a philosopher of theatre, Enrico Pitozzi, with that of an artist, Ermanna Montanari. Starting out by identifying central facets of the work of Teatro delle Albe—the company Montanari co-founded—the authors blend their imaginations without limiting the horizon of their reflections only to what takes place on stage, but opening their discourse to include philosophical and historical-artistic considerations that nourish theatrical composition. Cellula is a book in which photographic images drawn from forty years of experience dialogue among themselves and with the two collaborators’ words, gathered around specific themes such as the diaphanous, tactility, color, the vegetal, and geometry, each subject occupying a chapter.
The volume opens with the words by Mariangela Gualtieri in the form of a letter addressed to the two authors. The English translation is by Thomas Simpson.

IT. Ermanna Montanari, fondatrice, attrice, autrice e scenografa del Teatro delle Albe, conduce un personale percorso di ricerca vocale all’interno della compagnia, per il quale ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti nazionali e internazionali, tra cui sette premi Ubu, il Golden Laurel al Mess di Sarajevo, il premio Lo Straniero dedicato alla memoria di Carmelo Bene, il premio Eleonora Duse, quello dell’Associazione Nazionale Critici di Teatro e l’International Fajr Festival di Teheran. Nel 2011 ha assunto la direzione artistica del Santarcangelo Festival. Ha realizzato vari cd musicali insieme al compositore Luigi Ceccarelli, tra cui nel 2020 fedeli d’Amore edito da Stradivarius.

EN. Ermanna Montanari, founder, actress, author, and set designer for Teatro delle Albe, has pursued a unique pathway of vocal research within her company, for which she has received major national and international recognition, including seven Ubu Awards, the Golden Laurel given by Mess Sarajevo, the Lo Straniero Prize dedicated to the memory of Carmelo Bene, the Eleonora Duse Award, and Awards from the National Association of Theatre Critics (Italy) and the International Fajr Festival, Teheran. In 2011 she served as Artistic Director of the Santarcangelo Festival. Montanari’s vocal work in collaboration with composer Luigi Ceccarelli is featured in numerous CDs, most recently fedeli d’Amore (2020) edited by Stradivarius.
