Recensioni / Vittorio Frigerio. Bande dessinée et littérature: intersections, fascinations, divergences

This slim volume encompasses a meaningful message as Frigerio analyzes the interrelation between bande dessinée and literature as seen through the traditional lens of literary criticism. Comprised of six succinct chapters (Introduction – une littéraire fragile; Bref retour aux origines; La question des contraintes formelles; Le moment charnière; Le phénomène Pratt; La bande dessinée « adulte »; Bande dessinée et avantgarde; and, Simplicité industrielle vs complexité littéraire), Frigerio discusses what is similar and different between these two literary genres. Particularly relevant to one who is new to the examination of the bande dessinée is the historical context he supplies:

For one not familiar with the specific examples that Frigerio examines, he does include detailed footnotes. Nonetheless, one may find it helpful to find visual samples of the titles as this volume is an essay and as such, does not provide illustrated examples.
Particularly intriguing is the insightful examination of clearly defined technical aspects of the bande dessinée, such as how chapters are constructed in these “shorter” works and the use of black and white, and how these tightly delineated techniques allow an author to strive for a higher status of cultural respectability for his/her work:

Frigerio also compares and contrasts these techniques with other national traditions, most notably with the Italian one due, in large part, to his analysis of Ballad of the Salt Sea by Hugo Pratt, widely considered to be the father of the “graphic novel.” From there he enters into an exploration of editorial constraints, of what constitutes an “adult” bande dessinée, and of how the bande dessinée is regarded in light of artistic and literary avantgarde movements. In conclusion, Frigerio provides much food for thought that leads one to wonder what truly is the exact position of the bande dessinée in the literary world.
