Over 50 years since it was first published and translated into 23 languages, Victor Papanek's Design far the Real World is much more than a classic. It is one of the most widely read books on design, a benchmark for anyone interested in exploring responsible industrial design. Papanek, who was born in Vienna and fled Nazi Germany for the US, is the author everyone mentions when discussing a new way of thinking about design: sustainable, ecological, ethical. So, the new Italian edition edited by Alison J. Clarke and Emanuele Quinz (who wrote the foreword and afterword) is more than welcome. The translation is Guido Morbelli's from 1973. Why reread ìt? "To put it to the test regarding issues that animate our present and to put these matters to the test of time," writes Quinz. And we can only agree.
