Riviste / L'ospite ingrato / «Per voci interposte».

While translating a text, how can one identify and then transcribe its orality? Which mysterious mechanisms affect a translation’s life span? These were the first questions I asked myself while translating the first few pages of Lessons on Translation by Franco Fortini. The author, mirroring me, was asking the very same questions, with which he interspersed his text/notes-for-a-seminar in 1989. Fortini takes what he knows of Italian literary tradition, of Benedetto Croce’s peremptory precepts, of his own experience as a poet-translator, and of the traces the European theoretical revolutions of the 20th century left on his personal reflection to deliver a precious and unique reflection on translation. This article plumbs the main theoretical points discussed in this text, that the Les Belles Lettres editions had translated in order to publish it in France this year. The article ends with the almost fantasy-like tale of the last days of the long endeavor that was the French translation.
