This essay attempts to fathom the salient points of the Fortinian interpretation of Proust and of his Recherche, crossing the analysis of the translation of the Fugitive with that of the various articles that Fortini dedicated to the French writer. Starting from the study of a small but decisive stylistic detail, the Proustian go to head and therefore the Flaubertian question of “white spaces”, and continuing along the lines of the dichotomy between hypotactic and parataxis, what is slowly being brought out is precisely the “tragic”, philosophically negative côté of Fortinian aesthetic thought, always placed in fruitful tension with the dialectical one, fiercely opposed to the first.
